In the early 1990s there was an effort by advocates for individuals with intellectual disabilities to improve services in our communities. The Alabama Department of Mental Health authorized by Act 310, formed public, not-for-profit organizations state wide to improve community-based services to individuals with intellectual disabilities. By 1994, AAWA began operations as the Tuscaloosa Mental Retardation Authority and was charged with the responsibilities of planning, coordination and monitoring of community-based services. AAWA expanded their provision of services to include Bibb and Pickens counties by 2003. The ageny's name changed to Ability Alliance of West Alabama in 2004 to better reflect our mission, ideals and focus.
