We preserve the memories and artifacts of the iron and steel industries in Alabama and give them new life through educational programming.

Last year the Alabama State Legislature voted to cut all state funding for Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park, The Iron and Steel Museum of Alabama, and Brierfield Ironworks Historical State Park. These budget cuts threaten educational programs and continuing care for historic collections and buildings.

This is where we come in; the Alabama Historic Ironworks Foundation raises money to support the projects and programs of Tannehill and Brierfield State Parks.

The Alabama State Legislature created Tannehill and Brierfield Ironworks Historical State Parks to protect the ruins of historic ironworks and to preserve the surrounding areas as public park land. The Iron and Steel Museum of Alabama was established at Tannehill in 1981 to chronicle the history of the iron and steel industry in Alabama.

Each year thousands of school children, local residents, and tourists connect to their pasts at one of these sites. School groups tour the Tannehill Ironworks and Iron and Steel Museum to learn about natural resources, the iron-making process, and the people who used to live and work at these furnaces. Families step back in time to shop traditional handicrafts, converse with costumed interpreters, explore the furnace sites, and interact with the museum's displays. Visitors from around the state, greater Birmingham, and Jefferson, Tuscaloosa, and Bibb counties come to the parks to camp, fish, hike, and mountain bike.

These parks provide environmental education and conservation, arts and culture education, historic preservation, and recreation to the people who visit.

Let's show the legislature that preserving our natural environment, unique industrial history, and the recreational sites we've loved for generations is important to us. It should be important to them too!

Will you stand with us and show your support with a donation to the Alabama Historic Ironworks Foundation today?
