The Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama is dedicated to the social, civic and economic integration of Hispanic families in Alabama.
The Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama, or ¡HICA!, began in 1999 to meet the needs of the metro Birmingham area's growing Hispanic population. Co-founder and Executive Director Isabel Rubio formed ¡HICA! with the goal of helping families integrate in their new community and reach their aspirations. Today, ¡HICA! engages and empowers Alabama’s Hispanic community and its numerous cultures as an economic and civic integrator, social-resource connector, and statewide educator through its four programs: Strong Families, Immigration & Access to Justice, Asset Building & Economic Development, and Community Engagement & Education. In 2011, we worked with more than 2,800 unique families and led the civil rights coalition lawsuit against the anti-immigration law HB56.
