United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham serves more than 3,000 adults and children with all types of disabilities in our area.

United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham was founded in 1949 and provides quality programs designed to promote self reliance, present choices, and improve the quality of life for children and adults with disablities. We serve children and adults with cerebral palsy, as well as other disabilities including but not limited to mental retardation, traumatic brain injury, developmental disabilities, autism, down syndrome, spina bifida, and others.

UCP of Greater Birmingham serves more than 3,000 children and adults in Birmingham and the surrounding ten counties. We have a staff of approximately 100 who are committed to the deliver of quality services for all of our consumers. Working together with the individual, families and caregivers, we strive to provide the knowledge and tools necessary to empower people with disabilities to live life without limits.

We have the privilege of making things possible for the people we serve. Here's one recent inspiring story we're happy to tell...

Diagnosed with Down Syndrome, Jonathan experienced multiple hospitalizations due to significant health issues, including dehydration and feeding problems. His health deteriorated so much that his mother, Gamilah, had to quit work in order to stay at home with him to manage his increasingly complex health needs.

Gamilah began looking for help—and found it at United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham. She applied to enroll Jonathan in Hand In Hand and waited anxiously to hear whether or not he would be accepted. Because of donations to the Life Without Limits annual fund, he was accepted!

Today Jonathan walks without assistance, eats food from the table—just like his peers—and he enjoys playing and learning new things in class every day. He’s making progress in all areas of development. And Gamilah? She was able to return to work to support her family. Without Hand In Hand, Gamilah says that she “could not have helped Jonathan reach goals and cross barriers.”

There are many more children like Jonathan, and caring mothers like Gamilah, that need your support. Children and adults with disabilities need your help to live a life without limits.

As a retired librarian, I am now helping Hand in Hand with the cataloging of their library books and have been impressed with the program they provide for their children. Hand in Hand is truly a teaching preschool, not a nursery school. Way to go Hand in Hand staff.
